Last year when I delivered my presentation address during Airda’s AGM, I sketched an interesting canvas of India’s timeshare industry. Some of the highlights from this address can be useful to a wider audience – current customers who can feel they have made a great decision, and prospective customers who could be at that tipping point of a decision making process. Sometimes it helps to know where the industry is heading and the fact that the organized industry is in good hands.
Fast-growing user base of timeshare owner families
If you look at the reach of timeshare customers within Airda’s member base, you find a very encouraging figure of 450,000 timeshare owner families. This is a conservative estimate - though the unofficial figures go higher. Having said that, I would like to add that Airda represents approx 80% of the organized timeshare industry in India.
As the user base grows, timeshare can become a significant contributor to regional economies and the hospitality industry as a whole.
A very encouraging panorama of statistics
Going by recent indications we find an appreciable number of respondents who are at the verge of making a purchase decision. Some focused effort here can result in positive conversions and a substantial increase in the number of timeshare families. I have always felt that timeshare is the only customized holiday option to cater to the fast changing lifestyle needs, with tangible offerings and long-term benefits for the whole family.
Here’s a snapshot of facts and figures related to tourism in India:
AIRDA recently conducted a survey through an independent market research agency on the economic value addition of timeshare resorts to local and regional economies. The findings showed an encouraging trend with significant contributions – a noticeable wedge in the total tourism pie.
Managing a process of evolution
Over the years, Airda has gained in strength and purpose with active support from a growing member community. A community that has joined hands to establish a credible foundation – we also have an agenda in place addressing a wide range of touch points. Right from government relations, customer relations, classification guidelines, education and training. Our participation has also been visible in public speaking platforms at national and international levels, and programmes such as Athithi Devo Bhava.
We are currently in the process of setting priorities and working on strategies to appeal to a wider circle of resort owners and end customers. We are also widening our scale of operations and moving to the next level to provide extended value to our members.
There’s a great future for timeshare in India
I see a tremendous opportunity in the coming years for the growth and development of timeshare in the country. An industry that has the benefit of a well-defined regulatory format, transparency in sales and marketing, and an industry focus that is supportive to both customers and the member community. This alone can increase credibility levels for the organized sector in timeshare and vacation ownership.
